Our Story
Ten years ago, Valix Collective was born from a simple conviction: that the organizations doing the hardest, most essential work in our communities deserve thoughtful, strategic support to sustain and drive their missions.
Our founder, Jason McMonagle, spent years as a Marriage and Family Therapist embedded in San Francisco’s community mental health system. There, he witnessed firsthand how the right organizational structure, thoughtful leadership, and well-designed programs could transform lives. He learned that behind every effective direct service was a framework—often invisible but always essential—that allowed care to reach those who needed it most.
But Jason brought more than clinical insight to his work. As a trained professional writer specializing in technical, academic writing, and narrative nonfiction, he understood the art of storytelling—how to weave data and emotion, how to balance persuasive argument with authentic voice, and how to know when you’ve said just enough. These skills, combined with a therapist’s instinct for listening, asking the right questions, and building genuine rapport, proved invaluable when he decided to pivot his career toward fundraising.
When Jason founded Valix Collective, he knew he wanted to remain in the nonprofit sector. What began as a small consultancy has grown into a boutique firm specializing in the full spectrum of nonprofit fundraising: grant writing, government contract management, individual donor cultivation, and annual campaigns.
How We Work
Fundraising is a partnership, not a transaction. Each organization we work with has its own story, its own community, and its own vision for change. Our role is to help translate that vision into the language of funders—whether that’s a federal grant officer, a family foundation program director, or a longtime individual supporter.
Jason’s background as both therapist and writer shapes every conversation we have with clients and donors alike. The therapeutic skills—active listening, building trust, understanding what’s really being asked beneath the surface question—are essential when cultivating relationships with private donors and navigating complex stakeholder dynamics. The writing expertise ensures that every proposal, every case statement, every appeal letter tells a compelling story with precision and clarity.
We believe in clarity over jargon, relationships over templates, and strategies that honor both your organization’s values and your operational realities. We know that sustainable funding isn’t just about winning one big grant; it’s about building systems that support your work year after year.
What Drives Us
At the heart of our work is a deep respect for the nonprofit sector and the people who dedicate their careers to it. We’ve seen what’s possible when organizations have the resources they need to do their work well. We’ve also seen how much energy gets lost to poorly designed funding processes, unclear expectations, and the perpetual scramble for the next dollar.
That’s why we exist: to shoulder some of that burden, to bring strategic clarity to the fundraising process, and to help you build the financial foundation your mission deserves.
Our Commitment
Whether you’re launching your first capital campaign, navigating a complex government RFP, or reimagining your annual fund, we bring a decade of experience, a writer’s craft, and a therapist’s insight to every engagement. We listen carefully, we plan strategically, and we stay with you through implementation.
Because we believe the formula is simple: your mission + our craft = sustainable impact.
